Our students and pupils learn a lot of rules and tips as how to write and speak English. However, when asked to produce a text or speak autonomously, they don’t always manage to compile all these rules. This is when the Mémo comes in handy. I’ve spent the past 6 years gathering all the typical mistakes students make, numbering them in 5 sections:

N1, N2, N3… for mistakes linked to noun phrases

V1, V2, V3… for those liked to verbs

P1, P2, P3… for syntactic mistakes (P stands for « phrases » in French)

O1, O2, O3… for a few typical spelling mistakes (O stands for « orthographe »)

L1, L2, L3… for problems linked to lexicon (such as a short list of false friends).

When I wrote the Mémos, it was not about writing another comprehensive grammar textbook, but simply about helping our students become aware that they know a lot already and that the next step is for them to be able to self-correct when expressing themselves in English.

The rule numbers are the same in the three versions of the Mémo. There are simply more rules with more details and trickier examples in the B2-C1 version than the B1-B2 and the A2-B1 Mémos.

There is an index at the back of the Mémo to help teachers memorize the codes.

The « Mémo Activities » page on this blog is dedicated to sharing ideas on how to use the Mémos in class. So please feel free to add comments in French or English (it doesn’t matter).

Three versions of the « Mémo » are now available! You can get them from Génération 5 by clicking on the links below or ask your favorite local bookshop to order them for you.
